Custom Yoga Wear Development: From Sketch to Shelf in 8 Weeks

The eight-week custom development calendar, week by week: tech pack, pattern, sampling, size sets, bulk and shipment - what happens when, what you approve at each gate, and where timelines slip.

"How long does custom development take?" is the first question every brand asks, and the honest answer is a calendar, not a number. For a developed style with clear direction, eight weeks from approved sketch to shipped bulk is a realistic, repeatable schedule. Here is the calendar, week by week - including the approval gates where your decisions keep it moving.
This is the same schedule we run for custom and semi-custom programs at Miss K, and the same one shown in the development footage on our factory tour.

Weeks 1-2: Tech Pack, Pattern and Fabric Sourcing

Development starts on paper. Your reference garment or sketch becomes a tech pack - measurements, construction, fabric direction - and the pattern maker drafts the first pattern while fabric sourcing runs in parallel: mill options, stock checks, swatch pulls. Your approval gate: sign off the tech pack at the end of week two. The sections that belong in it are in the tech pack guide.

Week 3: First Sample

The sample room cuts and sews the first prototype. It will not be perfect - that is what it is for. You receive it, wear it, and run the evidence-based feedback round: worn photos, measurements against spec, a two-tier fix list. The format that makes rounds efficient is in the sample feedback guide.

Week 4: Revised Sample and Fabric Commit

The sample room corrects and resamples; in parallel, fabric locks: lab dips approved, lot booked against a retained swatch. Your approval gate: the revised sample. Most styles land here - two rounds is the normal path. If a third round is needed, the calendar stretches a week per round, which is why consolidated feedback matters.

Weeks 5-6: Size Set and Grading Approval

The approved sample gets graded across your size range, and a size set - one style in every size - is sewn for fit review at the extremes. This is the week inclusive sizing is actually won or lost, per the size grading guide. Your approval gate: sign off the size set and the final bulk spec.

Weeks 6-7: Bulk Production

Bulk cutting and sewing run with the golden sample as the physical standard, in-line QC on the line, and mid-production checks you can join by video. Bulk takes roughly two weeks for typical first-order quantities on a dedicated line - the day-by-day mechanics are in the production timeline guide.

Weeks 7-8: QC, Packing and Shipment

Final QC against the approved sample, labels and packing per spec, pre-shipment inspection, then handover to freight - air for launch-critical stock, sea for planned replenishment. Your gate: approve the pre-shipment inspection results before the cartons seal.

Where Timelines Slip - and How They Don't

Four slippage points, four habits that prevent them: late tech packs (write it in week one), scattered sample feedback (consolidate per round), missed approval gates (decide within 48 hours at each gate), and fabric booked late (lock the lot in week four). None of these costs money to fix - only discipline.

Common Questions

Can development run faster than 8 weeks?

Yes, on a reduced scope: a style adapted from an existing pattern with stocked fabric can compress to 5-6 weeks. Fully custom fabric development adds time up front.

What do I need to start week one?

A reference garment, a sketch, or even clear photos with notes - plus your size range and target launch date. The development team turns that into the pack.

Does the 8 weeks include shipping time?

It ends at handover to freight. Add 3-7 days for air, 25-40 for sea - the mode comparison is in the air versus sea guide.

Eight Weeks Is a System

Sketch to shelf in eight weeks is not speed for its own sake - it is four approval gates, two sample rounds and one size set, sequenced so nothing waits on nothing. Run it twice and your third style develops faster still, because the calendar is already a habit.
Custom development at Miss K runs exactly this calendar - gates, size sets and retained references included. Start week one with a sketch or a reference: info@misskyoga.com or WhatsApp +86 136 4085 9182.
