From Tech Pack to Bulk Production: How Activewear Sampling Really Works
A founder's guide to the activewear sampling process: what happens in the 5-7 day sampling window, why sample approval protects you, and how bulk production runs to the approved standard.
Sampling Is Where Brands Are Made or Lost
Founders spend weeks comparing suppliers, reading reviews and comparing prices. Then sampling starts, and everything that was promised on paper gets tested in fabric and thread.
Sampling is the stage where you learn who you are actually working with. Not from what they say, but from how they handle your questions, your revisions and your timeline. At Miss K, sampling typically runs 5 to 7 days, and those days tell you more about a manufacturing partner than any sales deck ever will.
Here is how the process works, step by step, so you know what to expect and what to watch for.
Steps 01-02: The Brief and the Fabric Decision
Everything starts with your brief. If you are working from our reference styles, this is where you pick the base styles, confirm colors and choose your branding options. If you are going semi-custom or full custom, this is where your sketches, tech pack or reference samples get translated into a development plan.
Then comes the fabric decision, and it is bigger than most founders expect. Our activewear is built on nylon-spandex blends of roughly 75/25, with sampling weights from 200 to 260 gsm depending on the style. Lighter weights suit tops and layering pieces; denser knits give leggings their compression and squat-proof opacity. This is also where customization choices get locked in: logo application, labels, packaging.
Get this stage right and everything downstream moves smoothly. Get it vague and you will pay for the confusion in revision rounds.
Step 03: Sampling, Days 1 to 7
Once fabrics and specs are confirmed, sampling begins. Within 5 to 7 days, you should have physical samples in hand.
When they arrive, do more than admire them. Stretch the seams flat against the light and check the stitch line. Squat in front of a window and check opacity. Wash them once and check the recovery. A sample that looks good but fails one of these tests is telling you something important before you have paid for bulk.
Revisions are normal. If the waistband needs to be tighter or the strap layout adjusted, that is what sampling is for. What matters is how precisely the factory responds: do they acknowledge each point, explain the fix and give you a clear timeline for the next round?
Step 04: Sample Approval - the Checkpoint That Protects You
Sample approval is not a formality. It is the checkpoint where the approved sample becomes the legal standard for your bulk production.
Sign off too early and you lose leverage on quality issues later. Sign off only after the sample matches what you actually want to sell. At Miss K, bulk production does not start until you have approved the sample in writing, and the approved sample becomes the reference that factory QC checks bulk against.
This is also the moment to confirm your MOQ and size breakdown. Our programs run at 800 to 1,000 pieces per color, so the approval decision deserves real thought: this is the order your customers will actually see.
Steps 05-07: Bulk, QC and Shipment
After approval, bulk production runs 15 to 25 days. During this window, the approved sample is the standard the line works against, and factory QC checks pieces as they move through production.
For key programs, we join the inspection on site - walking the line, pulling pieces at random, checking seams against the approved sample. Standard QC happens on every order either way; the on-site layer is an extra set of eyes for orders where the stakes are higher.
When bulk is approved, shipment is arranged: export documentation, packing and hand-off to your forwarder or door-to-door delivery, depending on what you set up. Worldwide shipping is coordinated end to end, so the process does not fall apart at the last step.
