How to Care for Your Yoga Wear: A Complete Care Guide
A complete care guide for premium yoga wear: cold washing, no fabric softener, air drying and storage tips that keep nylon-spandex activewear looking and performing like new.

A customer just spent eighty dollars on a pair of premium yoga leggings. They love the fit, the fabric feels incredible, and they wear them three times a week. Then, two months later, they send you a message: the waistband is rolling, the black has faded to a washed-out grey, and the spandex has given up.
This is not a quality problem. This is a care problem. And it is one of the most common reasons why premium activewear gets returned, reviewed poorly, or quietly never reordered.
The good news: most activewear damage is preventable with a few simple habits. Here is what you should tell your customers - and what we tell ours.
Wash Cold, Always
Nylon-spandex fabrics are engineered at the yarn level. Hot water breaks down the elastane fibers that give the fabric its stretch and recovery. Every hot wash permanently weakens the spandex, even if the damage is not visible until a few weeks later.
Cold water (30°C or below) cleans activewear just as effectively as hot water for sweat and daily grime. It protects the spandex, preserves the dye, and saves energy. There is no reason to wash yoga wear in hot water, ever.
Say No to Fabric Softener
This one surprises most people. Fabric softener coats the fibers with a thin waxy layer that makes clothes feel soft in the short term. But on activewear, that coating clogs the spaces between the nylon and spandex fibers that allow moisture to evaporate.
The result: a legging that used to wick sweat now traps it. The fabric feels less breathable, takes longer to dry, and starts holding odor instead of releasing it. Fabric softener on activewear is like putting a raincoat on a sponge.
Skip the softener. If the fabric feels stiff after washing, a small amount of white vinegar in the rinse cycle does the job without coating the fibers.
Air Dry, Away from Sunlight
The dryer is the single fastest way to destroy premium activewear. Heat from a tumble dryer causes spandex fibers to contract and weaken. Over multiple cycles, the fabric loses its stretch recovery, the waistband starts to sag, and the surface develops tiny pills where the heat has damaged the fibers.
Air drying is gentler and free. Lay the garment flat or hang it on a padded hanger, away from direct sunlight. UV rays fade dye and break down spandex over time, so drying in the shade is better for the fabric than drying in full sun.
If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove the garment while it is still slightly damp. But honestly - air drying takes the same amount of time and costs nothing.
The Sweat Rinse
You do not need to wash activewear after every single wear. In fact, over-washing accelerates fabric wear. But you should rinse sweaty pieces in cold water within a few hours of wearing them, even if you are not doing a full wash.
Sweat contains salts and oils that break down spandex and nylon fibers over time. A quick cold water rinse removes most of these before they can do damage. Hang the piece to dry, and it is ready for the next wear.
This one habit - the post-session rinse - can double the life of a pair of premium leggings.
Storage: Fold, Do Not Hang
Hanging activewear on thin hangers stretches the shoulders and waistbands over time. Fold your yoga wear and store it flat in a drawer or on a shelf. This preserves the shape, prevents hanger marks on delicate waistbands, and keeps the fabric in its natural state between wears.
For printed styles, store them inside out to protect the print surface from friction against other garments.
Why This Matters for Your Brand
If you are building an activewear brand, your customers will judge you not just on how the product looks on day one, but on how it holds up after a month of real use. A customer whose leggings still look and feel great after twenty washes is a customer who will reorder.
Including a care card with your products - a small printed insert with washing instructions - costs almost nothing and signals that you care about the customer experience beyond the sale. It also reduces returns and negative reviews caused by preventable care mistakes.
